How to dispose of a dishwasher
By Junk Lords crew / Published / Updated
Step 1: Shut everything off
Turn off the breaker for the dishwasher and the water valve under the sink. Run the faucet briefly to relieve pressure. If you are not comfortable with plumbing or wiring, have the person installing the new one do this part.
Step 2: Disconnect it
- Remove the kick plate at the bottom.
- Disconnect the water supply line and the drain hose, with a towel and shallow pan ready.
- Disconnect the power cord or, if it is hard-wired, have a qualified person disconnect and cap the wires.
- Remove the mounting screws that hold it to the counter or cabinets.
We do not disconnect plumbing or hard-wired electrical.
Step 3: Slide it out
Pull it out slowly onto cardboard or a towel to protect the floor. Watch for leftover water in the bottom.
Step 4: Decide where it goes
- The installer or store: many will haul away the old unit when they install the new one. Ask before the install day.
- Your town facility: most accept appliances. Dishwashers do not contain refrigerant, so the fee is often lower than for a fridge.
- A pickup: $69 alone, or free when added to any job.

A large job, about 5 cubic yards or roughly a garage bay, is $239. An extra-large job, about 10 cubic yards, is $479, and anything past 10 cubic yards is $45 per yard. A mattress or box spring is $64 alone or $20 each on a job. A washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher is $69 alone and free on a job. A fridge, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier is $99 alone or $35 on a job. A TV or monitor is a $15 add-on. Construction debris is the job price plus 20%. Estate cleanouts start at $499 and hoarding cleanouts at $599. The full list is on the pricing page.
Kitchen remodels
A dishwasher often comes out with old cabinets, countertops and a stove. The cabinets and counters are construction debris, priced at the job price plus 20%. The dishwasher and stove are free on the job. A fridge on the same job is $35.
A broken dishwasher full of water
If it stopped mid-cycle, bail out the standing water with a cup and sponge before disconnecting it. Leave the door cracked for a day to dry.
Is it worth repairing?
Repairs on an older dishwasher often cost close to a new one, so many people replace it. If you replace it, plan the old one's removal at the same time so it does not sit in the garage.
Portable dishwashers
Portable and countertop dishwashers just unplug and disconnect from the faucet. They are priced the same way: $69 alone or free on a job. Drain the hose and the tub first.
How booking works
Send photos through the quote form or text them to (207) 333-1422. No card is needed to ask. Caden looks at the photos and sends your price. If it works for you, you pay from the link he sends and that confirms the slot. The price we send is the price you pay unless the pile changes. If you add things after the price goes out, the price is updated before work starts, not after.
