How to get rid of old appliances
By Junk Lords crew / Published / Updated
Two kinds of appliances
Appliances fall into two groups. Washers, dryers, stoves, ovens and dishwashers have no refrigerant and are mostly metal. Fridges, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain refrigerant that must be recovered by certified people, which costs more to handle.
Who will pick up old appliances for free?
Sometimes a neighbor will take a working washer or stove at no charge, and some stores take the old unit when they deliver a new one. Ask at purchase. A working appliance can also go to a buyer through a local listing. Our pickup is not free, but washers, dryers, stoves and dishwashers cost nothing extra when added to a job.
Prep before removal
- Washers: shut off the water, disconnect hoses and drain them into a bucket.
- Dryers: unplug and disconnect the vent. Gas dryers must be disconnected and capped by a qualified person.
- Stoves: electric ones just unplug. Gas stoves need the gas shut off and the line capped by a qualified person.
- Dishwashers: turn off power and water, disconnect, and pull it out from under the counter if you can.
- Fridges and freezers: empty and defrost a day ahead.
We do not disconnect gas or hard-wired electrical.
Where appliances can go
Most Maine town facilities accept appliances, often with a separate fee for refrigerant units. Check your town before loading up, since hours and rules differ.

Basements and stairs
Washers and dryers often live in basements. Mention the stairs and any tight turns in your photos so we can plan the carry.
Small appliances
Microwaves, toaster ovens, coffee makers, vacuums and space heaters go with any job, priced by the space they take. Put them in a box so they are easy to see in your photos.
Landlords
Landlords replacing appliances between tenants can add the old ones to a turnover job and be invoiced.
How booking works
Send photos through the quote form or text them to (207) 333-1422. No card is needed to ask. Caden looks at the photos and sends your price. If it works for you, you pay from the link he sends and that confirms the slot. The price we send is the price you pay unless the pile changes. If you add things after the price goes out, the price is updated before work starts, not after.
