How to get rid of an old grill

By Junk Lords crew / Published / Updated

Step 1: Remove the propane tank

Disconnect and remove the propane tank. Propane tanks are excluded from our pickups and most trash programs. Many Maine town transfer stations take them for a small fee, and propane exchange cages at stores accept tanks for swap.

Step 2: Clean it out

Empty cold ash from charcoal grills and scrape grease trays. Grease attracts animals and makes a mess in transit.

Step 3: Choose where it goes

  • Sell or give away a working grill.
  • Town metal pile: many transfer stations accept grills as scrap metal once the tank is out.
  • Pickup: one grill is a single item at $64, or it goes on a job with other items.

Take it apart?

Not usually necessary. If the grill is rusted through and falling apart, put loose parts in a box.

Posted prices

Every job starts from the same posted price card. A single item is $64. A small job, up to about 1.5 cubic yards, is $119. A medium job, about 3 cubic yards or roughly a room, is $189. A large job, about 5 cubic yards or roughly a garage bay, is $239. An extra-large job, about 10 cubic yards, is $479, and anything past 10 cubic yards is $45 per yard. A mattress or box spring is $64 alone or $20 each on a job. A washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher is $69 alone and free on a job. A fridge, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier is $99 alone or $35 on a job. A TV or monitor is a $15 add-on. Construction debris is the job price plus 20%. Estate cleanouts start at $499 and hoarding cleanouts at $599. The full list is on the pricing page.

Smokers and fire pits

Smokers and metal fire pits work the same way. Make sure all ash is cold.

Patio cleanouts

If you are clearing a patio or deck, add old furniture, umbrellas and planters to the same job.

Why propane is excluded

Even an empty-looking propane tank can hold gas. That is why it cannot ride with household junk. Keep the tank for a new grill, exchange it at a store cage, or take it to your town station.

Natural gas grills

Grills connected to a home gas line need to be disconnected and capped by a qualified person before pickup. We do not disconnect gas.

Rusted grills

A grill rusted to pieces is fine. Gather the parts in one spot so nothing is left behind.

Seasonal timing

Spring is the busy time for grill swaps. Booking the old one with a spring yard cleanup keeps it on one job.

Charcoal grills and smokers

Empty the ash completely and let it sit for a couple of days so nothing is still warm. Cold ash can go in a bag in your household trash. Kettle grills, barrel smokers and pellet grills all go on the pickup once they are empty and cool. Pellet grills should have leftover pellets removed from the hopper.

Grill covers, tool sets and old cast iron grates can go on the same pickup. Put them next to the grill so the crew sees them in the photos and they are included in the price you approve.

How booking works

Send photos through the quote form or text them to (207) 333-1422. No card is needed to ask. Caden looks at the photos and sends your price. If it works for you, you pay from the link he sends and that confirms the slot. The price we send is the price you pay unless the pile changes. If you add things after the price goes out, the price is updated before work starts, not after.
