How to get rid of a washer and dryer
By Junk Lords crew / Published / Updated
Disconnecting the washer
- Turn off both water valves behind the washer.
- Unplug it.
- Disconnect the hot and cold hoses and drain them into a bucket.
- Pull the drain hose out of the standpipe and let it drain.
- Tape the lid or door shut.
Front loaders often hold water in the bottom. Run a drain and spin cycle before disconnecting if it still works.
Disconnecting the dryer
- Electric dryers: unplug and disconnect the vent hose.
- Gas dryers: the gas must be shut off and the line capped by a qualified person.
- Clean the lint trap and the vent opening while it is pulled out.
We do not disconnect gas lines.
Sell or give away working units
Working washers and dryers, especially matching pairs, sell well through local listings. The buyer handles the lifting. A pair that has not moved in a week or two at a fair price is probably ready for removal.
Where old ones can go
- The store delivering your new set: many take the old ones. Ask at purchase.
- Your town facility: most accept appliances. Washers and dryers have no refrigerant.
- A pickup: $69 each alone, free when added to any job.
Posted prices
Every job starts from the same posted price card. A single item is $64. A small job, up to about 1.5 cubic yards, is $119. A medium job, about 3 cubic yards or roughly a room, is $189. A large job, about 5 cubic yards or roughly a garage bay, is $239. An extra-large job, about 10 cubic yards, is $479, and anything past 10 cubic yards is $45 per yard. A mattress or box spring is $64 alone or $20 each on a job. A washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher is $69 alone and free on a job. A fridge, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier is $99 alone or $35 on a job. A TV or monitor is a $15 add-on. Construction debris is the job price plus 20%. Estate cleanouts start at $499 and hoarding cleanouts at $599. The full list is on the pricing page.
Basements and stairs
Laundry is often in the basement, on narrow stairs. A washer can weigh 150 pounds or more. Moving one safely takes two people and an appliance dolly. Mention the stairs, any turns and the bulkhead in your photos.
Price examples
- A washer and dryer alone: $69 each.
- A washer and dryer with a few pieces of furniture: the job price, both appliances free.
- A full basement cleanout with the laundry pair: the job price, both free.
Stacked units
Stacked washer dryer units should be separated or moved together by whoever disconnects them. Let us know which in your photos.
Clearing the laundry area
Once the pair is out, people often find old detergent jugs, drying racks and a broken laundry sink cabinet. Empty jugs and racks can go with the job. Full containers of cleaning chemicals should be used up or kept out of the pile, since chemicals are on our exclusion list.
How booking works
Send photos through the quote form or text them to (207) 333-1422. No card is needed to ask. Caden looks at the photos and sends your price. If it works for you, you pay from the link he sends and that confirms the slot. The price we send is the price you pay unless the pile changes. If you add things after the price goes out, the price is updated before work starts, not after.
