How to get rid of old furniture
By Junk Lords crew / Published / Updated
Start by sorting what still has life
Solid wood dressers, clean tables and good chairs often find a new home through local listings or family. Sagging couches, stained mattresses, particle board bookcases that came apart in a move and anything with pet damage usually do not. Be honest about which group each piece is in, so you do not spend weeks listing something nobody will take.
Option 1: Sell it
Price it low, post clear photos and measurements, and say the buyer handles pickup. Furniture that has not sold in a week or two at a low price is unlikely to sell at all.
Option 2: Give it away
A free listing moves faster than a sale. Have someone with you when strangers come to the house, and set a deadline before you move to the next option.
Option 3: Haul it yourself
Most towns accept furniture at the transfer station or a bulky waste facility, sometimes with a sticker, permit or per-item fee. Check your town's page before you load up. You will need a vehicle big enough, a helper, and a free day when the facility is open.
Option 4: Have it carried out
We carry furniture out from any room, including upstairs bedrooms and basements, and take care of disposal. You do not need to move it to the curb first.
Posted prices
Every job starts from the same posted price card. A single item is $64. A small job, up to about 1.5 cubic yards, is $119. A medium job, about 3 cubic yards or roughly a room, is $189. A large job, about 5 cubic yards or roughly a garage bay, is $239. An extra-large job, about 10 cubic yards, is $479, and anything past 10 cubic yards is $45 per yard. A mattress or box spring is $64 alone or $20 each on a job. A washer, dryer, stove or dishwasher is $69 alone and free on a job. A fridge, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier is $99 alone or $35 on a job. A TV or monitor is a $15 add-on. Construction debris is the job price plus 20%. Estate cleanouts start at $499 and hoarding cleanouts at $599. The full list is on the pricing page.
Common furniture prices
- One couch, recliner, dresser or table: $64.
- A bedroom set with mattress: usually a small or medium job, plus $20 for the mattress on a job.
- A living room of furniture: usually a medium job, $189.
- A whole apartment of furniture: usually a large or extra-large job.
Getting it out safely
- Empty drawers and remove glass tops and mirrors.
- Clear the hallway and stairs.
- Measure tight turns and mention them with your photos.
- Do not try to drag heavy pieces down stairs alone just to save a step.
Do not leave it at the curb
Curbside trash pickup in most Maine towns does not take furniture, and leaving it out can lead to a notice from the city or landlord.
Moving and downsizing
Furniture is the biggest part of most move-outs and downsizing jobs. Measure the new place before moving day so you know which pieces will not fit, then plan their removal for the week before you go. That keeps the moving day simple.
How booking works
Send photos through the quote form or text them to (207) 333-1422. No card is needed to ask. Caden looks at the photos and sends your price. If it works for you, you pay from the link he sends and that confirms the slot. The price we send is the price you pay unless the pile changes. If you add things after the price goes out, the price is updated before work starts, not after.
